September Gurls

I meant to start writing more posts, but September has been pretty busy with weddings and traveling, not to mention football.  Well, ok, I really haven’t spent much time keeping up with football this year. However, I did see the last 2 minutes of the ECU/VA Tech game where ECU sealed a 35-28 victory.  Saw it on the TV in the lobby in the Atlantic 19 Hotel in Virginia Beach as I was waiting on the rest of our group to arrive to go to dinner.

Yes, so a bunch of us were in Virginia Beach for the Neptune Festival the last weekend of September.  Unfortunately, with the winds and rains, many of the events on the boardwalk were cancelled.  Fortunately, the main event, the sand sculpture competition, was still held, which we got to check out.  And the vendors were moved inside of the convention center, which was down the road a bit from the boardwalk.

Overall, it was a good weekend even though the schedule had to be modified.  But that’s not what I came here to talk about….

The real reason for this post was really to do a check-in and post a song.  And what better song to remind us that September isn’t all that bad than a song from 1970s college radio favorites, Big Star, entitled “September Gurls” from their 1974 LP “Radio City.”

It’s All Kool & The Gang

A while back, I was trying to deconstruct the hooks in Nas’s “It Ain’t Hard To Tell.”  from 1994’s Illmatic album.  More specifically, I was interested in the looped “Dada Da Da”  at the beginning of the track, also featured throughout the track.  There was something very catchy about it, so I decided to search on the interwebs for the answer. Hit The Road, Jack!!

Well, there you are…. It’s early Saturday Afternoon. It’s late spring and there isn’t an darn thing on TV, not that day time TV is really all that great.
We all know that. I mean, there’s no football for another 3 or so months. And you’ve already caught up with your Netflix binge last weekend. You’ve flushed most of the week down the tubes already in a florescent lit purgatory called an office park, so you should make this day right?

So what do you do, weekend warrior?

Obviously, you can get a jump start on the TPS report that will be due EOB on Monday. Surely, that will give you more time to spin around in your chair in the morning.

How about finishing up all that yard work that you have been putting off? Seriously, that grass isn’t going to mow itself. And all of the swelling has gone down from the hornet’s nest you ran over 2 weeks ago. Time to man up and tackle the backyard jungle. Or, not…. You haven’t heard any rumblings from the HOA….yet. Your motto is “Hard work pays off later, procrastination pays of NOW! Ya heard!”

Nope, it’s a day to kick back in your jammies and add up the layers of Cheetos dust while you watch “Mr. Beaver Construction Presents: Smokey & The Bandit II.” You know what I’m talking about. Someone buys a couple of hours worth of air time on the non-network affiliate channel and plays some 20+ year old movie broken up with their own ads. They are usually playing on the TV in the waiting room at the Mr. Quick’s Lube & Go.

Here’s a thought. Why not get out of the friggin’ house for a while? Get those Vitamin D stores replenished!

Seriously, y’all really need a change of scenery.  Even if it’s just a walk around the block, at least you have gotten up and moved around a bit.  And also given your brain something to process.

Maybe you are like me and live in a neighborhood that has access to amenities.  I live within walking distance of a Greenway and a Nature Preserve.  And additionally, a short bicycle ride to a large lake.  Lots of people take advantage of these things.  And are better people for it.

Of course, if you have a car, you can always take ride somewhere.  Even though gas prices are creeping back up, it still can be pretty fun just to take a random drive to a different part of town just to take in some different scenery.  And there is plenty to see if you are actually open to it.  It’s something I enjoy doing.  And it’s something you should try too.
